What is a custom made rubber compound?
Custom made rubber compounds come in all shapes, forms, sizes and weights. Basically, a rubber compound is a mixture of base polymer(s), fillers and other chemicals which form a finished rubber product. The basis of rubber compound designing is the selection of the polymer type.
To the elastomer, the compounder can add several reinforcing agents such as:
- Carbon black
- Coloured pigments
- Curing or vulcanizing agents
- Activators
- Anti radiation additives
- Plasticizers
- Antioxidants
- Accelerators
The combinations that exist for forming a rubber compound are almost endless.
Technical requirements for custom made rubber compounds
Just like with any other product, our custom made rubber compound also needs to fit its technical requirements. According the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) it is fundamental that an elastomer (rubber) satisfies the next two criteria:
- An elastomer (rubber) compound can not break when stretched to about 100 percent.
- When an elastomer custom made rubber compound is being stretched for 5 minutes and then released, the compound must retract to within 10 percent of its initial length within 5 minutes of releasing it.
